It is essential for the professional dentist in these times of constant change, to keep in touch with the latest scientific and technological developments in their area of competence; hence the need to update their knowledge in the different proposals for studies that provide generators bodies of knowledge. The Certificate Clinical Research in Oral Surgery  I, a component of UNICAL’s Master Program in Oral Surgery, by its own characteristics, gives the possibility to the dentist to systematically know the advances in research and teaching which will enable him to enrich its theoretical corpus and can thus significantly improve decision-making. Also, both the academic activities and practice development promote a process of formation of related skills in the research activity.

The Certificate Clinical Research in Oral Surgery  I will be innovative in achieving skills for the development of cognitive and technical skills on the research activity. Creating a continuous update in the formation of professional integrity and with a broad sense of social relevance.

Academic Components

The Certificate has two main components:

1. The theoretical research component, which main objectives are to allow the participants to:

  • Integrate and apply knowledge and skills about the characteristics of adult learning,
  • Learn about the educational theories.
  • Become familiar with the virtual learning environments.

2. The Practical/Clinical component which is developed in the participants’ own workspace, with regular online communication of results and delivery of reports.

This Practical/Clinical component is developed through the Clinical Orientation Program (POC, for its name in Spanish). POC is a methodological strategy of training by competencies developed by BOGIOL (2015), that allows participants to convert their working environment into a space of data and information, which turns into a knowledge-generating cognitive contributions necessary for the resolution of clinical problems. Beyond this definition, the POC is a praxis that allows the meaningful learning for the development of the psycho-motor and affective skills of a new clinical practice.

It is based on the development of a series of clinical activities previously established and strategically designed to be routinely incorporated into the labor activity of participants to make them their personal domains (Senge, 2002)

Operationally, the POC is done on the basis of a set of systematically pre-established clinical guidelines, which the participant receives during their classroom sessions for immediate application in their respective working environment. This set of clinical guidelines regularly implemented by participants in their work environment, assumes a continuous training, self-evaluated, supervised by lecturers through the clinical trials reported in the Moodle platform and bio-ethically based in the resolution of the real needs of the patient.
